Men’s Soccer Draws with Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Regis College took the lead late in the first half, but Westfield State was able to even the match in the second half as the Pride and Owls eventually played to a 1-1 draw Monday evening in a non-conference men's collegiate soccer match at Alumni Field.

The action in the first half went back-and-forth until there were seven minutes remaining in the period when the Pride put together a serious offensive threat. After a shot by William Comeiro (Woburn, Mass.) was turned away by Owl goalie Sean Newmark, the rebound fell at the foot of Nolan McMahon (White River Junction, Vt.), whose crossing pass was redirected into the net by Derrick Camara (Berkley, Mass.) for Camara's first career collegiate goal.

The Pride created two solid chances to increase their lead early in the second half, but shots by Rafael Morales (Manati, Puerto Rico) and Brevin Frankel (Millbury, Mass.) were stopped by Newmark. Regis maintained the pressure midway through the half, but the combination of Newmark and the Owl defense prevented shots by Morales and Agu Silva-Olivera (Lunenburg, Mass.) from crossing the goal line into the net.

With less than 16 minutes remaining in regulation, Westfield State quickly advanced the ball from one end of the field to the other. Carter Hebert received a long pass and headed it to Ryan Viana, whose long blast found the back of the net for the game-tying goal.

Kyle Weidemann (Piscataway, N.J.) started in net for the Pride and made one save before Caleb Russo (Brookfield, N.H.) replaced him for the second half and finished with four saves. Newmark was credited with eight saves as Regis ended up with more shots on goal than Westfield State, 10-6, led by Silva-Olivera with three shots on goal.

Regis (4-7-3) enters the home stretch of the regular season with three conference matches remaining, starting with a trip to face Anna Maria College Wednesday, Oct. 16, for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
