Regis Men’s Soccer Rallies to Earn Result on Senior Day

WESTON, Mass. - After falling behind in the first half, Regis College tied the match early in the second half and then held on to draw with New England College, 1-1, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer match at Regis Stadium.

In the 53rd minute, Joey Davila (Bristol, Conn.) sent a crossing pass from the left side of the field to Dane Peterson (San Diego, Calif.) inside the box. Peterson found some space and blasted a shot into the left side of the net for his fifth goal of the season overall and third goal within the last four matches.

Both teams threatened to pull ahead, but neither one was able to complete that task. The Pride created two chances within the final eight minutes of regulation, but both shots by Sebastian Ortiz (Carolina, Puerto Rico) were turned away by Pilgrim goalie Hayden Walker.

New England College (3-4-6, 2-3-5 GNAC) struck first in the 29th minute after creating a corner kick opportunity. Darren Mota's entry pass was met by Chase Gurtowsky with a header that found the back of the net for the opening tally of the contest.

The Pride finished with a slight edge in shots, 18-16, led by Peterson with seven total shots. Mota, Noel Huliselan, and Santiago Sanchez paced the Pilgrims with four total shots apiece.

Kyle Weidemann (Piscataway, N.J.) started in goal for the Pride and made one save during the first half before Chris Alcon (Weston, Fla.) took over after halftime and collected three saves. Walker was credited with five saves during the match.

Before the match, Aidan Falvey (Medford, Mass.), Brevin Frankel (Millbury, Mass.), Chris Guadagno (Miami, Fla.), Federico Lavini-Ayalla (Weston, Fla.), and Weidemann were honored during the Senior Day presentation. All five players started the match for the Pride, with Lavini-Ayalla playing all 90 minutes and the other four players on the field for at least half of the contest.

Regis (4-7-2, 4-6-1 GNAC) steps outside the conference to face Westfield State Monday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m., followed by a league match at Anna Maria College, currently fourth in the GNAC standings, Wednesday evening, Oct. 16, beginning at 6 p.m.
