Men’s Soccer Picks Up Key Conference Win

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College continually pressured the Lasell University defense, taking the early lead and keeping the Lasers at arm's length for most of the match as the Pride earned a 4-1 victory Wednesday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer match at Regis Stadium.

Less than five minutes into the contest, Regis drew a corner kick, which was taken by Joey Davila (Bristol, Conn.). Davila's entry pass was met with a header by Federico Lavini-Ayalla (Weston, Fla.) which found the back of the net for Lavini-Ayalla's fourth goal of the season.

In the 18th minute, the Pride regained possession and Davila took the ball down the left side of the field. His crossing pass once again met a teammate's head, but this time it was Haroun Mafhoum (Bellingham, Mass.) with the successful header for his second goal of the year to increase the Regis advantage.

Regis continued to pressure the Laser defense, including a rush into the box by Dane Peterson (San Diego, Calif.) in the 34th minute that was interrupted by a foul on Lasell goalie Antonio Centracchio, creating a penalty kick opportunity. Lavini-Ayalla converted the penalty kick for his second goal of the match and fifth of the season, extending the Pride lead to 3-0.

The Lasers attempted to start a comeback as Mpumelelo Maphumulo picked up his seventh goal of the season in the 37th minute off an assist from Dillon Winkelmann to bring Lasell back within two goals. However, in the 64th minute, after a shot by Aidan Falvey (Medford, Mass.) hit the left post, the ball bounced directly to Nolan McMahon (White River Junction, Vt.), who converted the rebound for his fourth goal of the season.

The Pride maintained the majority of the possession for the rest of the contest, highlighted by a shot by McMahon in the 69th minute that hit the left post. Centracchio finished with four saves, all coming in the second half as Regis outshot Lasell after halftime, 13-4.

Chris Alcon (Weston, Fla.) picked up his fourth victory of the season as he made sure the Regis defense kept the Lasers from creating too many good scoring chances. McMahon led the Pride offense with five total shots, including three shots on goal.

Regis (4-7-1, 4-6 GNAC) hosts New England College Saturday, Oct. 12, starting at 2 p.m., with the Senior Day presentation scheduled to take place before the match. Lasell (1-8-3, 1-4-3 GNAC) travels to face Johnson and Wales Saturday for a 12 p.m. start.
