WESTON, Mass. - Regis College picked up an early goal, and then the Pride defense held off the offensive attack by Emmanuel College, as the Pride defeated the Saints, 1-0, Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer match at Regis Stadium.
After taking multiple shots within the first few minutes of action, the Pride broke through the Saints defense to score the first and only goal of the match in the 15th minute of play. After a shot from Michael Cipriano (Thomaston, Conn.) had been saved by Saints goalie, Maddox Pierce, Jorge Pineda (Weston, Fla.) collected the ball to gain possesion, then cross pass to Dane Peterson (San Diego, Calif.) who met it with a header that found the back of the net for the Pride.
Emmanuel immediately responded with several scoring chances, but Chris Alcon (Weston, Fla. ) would not allow any shots past him. The Saints would take three shots in the last 10 minutes of the first half, but attempts made by Joey Soucy, Ryan Ragosta, and Samuel Cote sailed wide.
Emmanuel took six shots at the start of the second half, putting pressure on the Regis defense. In an attempt to score, Peterson took a penalty kick for the Pride after a yellow card, however, he could not get past Maddox in the 77th minute. Both teams battled for the remainder of the match, but were unable to score, resulting in a final of 1-0.
Alcon started and remained in net for the Pride facing four shots on goal, making four saves. Pierce faced six shots on goal and earned five saves.
