Men's Soccer Holds On for First GNAC Win of 2024

NEW LONDON, N.H. – After a nearly scoreless first half, Regis gained momentum by scoring two goals and defeated Colby Sawyer, 2-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Kelsey Soccer Field.

After leading the Chargers with eight shots in the first half, the Pride were able to break through the Chargers defense, scoring the first goal of the match in the 39th minute of action. Regis collected two throw-in opportunities to push their way up the field, adding pressure to the Chargers defense, and moving closer to the box. Creating an opportunity to score, Nolan McMahon (White River Junction, Vt.) took control and found a gap into the net for the first Pride goal of the game.

In the 57th minute, after a trip in the box was called on the Charger defense, Regis was awarded a penalty kick. Carrying offensive momentum from the first half, Michael Arguelles (Miami, Fla.) took the penalty shot, sending the ball past the Chargers goalie and into the back of the net to cushion the Pride lead.

Just minutes later, Colby Sawyer made their way into the Pride defensive zone where Kaden Lewis took a shot but was unsuccessful as Chris Alcon (Weston, Fla.) made a save in net. In the 82nd minute, the Chargers scored as Ryan Wilson connected with Cullen Visscher to score the first goal for the Chargers. Both teams were unable to score for the remainder of the match.

Alcon started the match in net for the Pride, collecting six saves in the 90 minutes of play for his first career collegiate win.

Regis (1-2-1, 1-1 GNAC) will travel to face Elms College on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 2:00 p.m.
