WESTON, Mass. - Regis College battled throughout the evening, but Johnson and Wales University was able to score twice in the first half and then hold on for a 2-0 victory Saturday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer match at Regis Stadium.
Regis put together the first scoring chance of the night just three minutes into the contest, but a shot by Nolan McMahon (White River Junction, Vt.) was turned away by Wildcat goalie Sean Furtek. JWU gained possession and eventually drew a penalty kick opportunity in the 11th minute which Aidan Bagley converted to put the visitors on top.
In the 31st minute, Johnson and Wales raced down the field, with Befi Wanimbo dribbling down the left side before sending a crossing pass into the box. Conner Elliott met the ball at the right post and found the lower right corner of the net to increase the Wildcat lead to 2-0.
McMahon created another scoring opportunity in the first minute of the second half, but Furtek once again made the save. Both teams took long distance shots during the second half in an effort to either put the goalie on the spot with the initial shot or create an open rebound chance, but both keepers were able to corral the remaining shots on goal.
Furtek finished with five saves as he earned the clean sheet. Caleb Russo (Brookfield, N.H.) started in goal for the Pride and made two saves in the first half while Chris Alcon (Weston, Fla.) replaced Russo after halftime and was credited with three saves.
