Men’s Soccer Earns Third Shutout Over Past Week

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College continues to use home field to its advantage, collecting its fourth straight victory, including third shutout in that span, with a 2-0 victory over Anna Maria College Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer match at Regis Stadium.

The Pride once again put the pressure on their opponent's defense right from the start of the match. In the 29th minute, Nolan McMahon (White River Junction, Vt.) sent a crossing pass into the box, and Federico Lavini-Ayalla (Weston, Fla.) redirected the ball into the net for his second goal in as many matches.

Anna Maria threatened to tie the match early in the second half, as Rubelsi Moran blasted a shot in the 51st minute that was caught by Regis goalie Ethan Donahue (Methuen, Mass.). In the 62nd minute, Moran sent a pass into the box, but Matthew Pearle's header sailed wide to the right as he was facing in the wrong direction when the ball reached him.

Regis added an insurance goal in the 70th minute when Joey Davila (Bristol, Conn.) raced up the left side of the field and sent a crossing pass towards the goal area. Javin Stickney (Gorham, Maine) slowed the ball down to allow Michael Arguelles (Miami, Fla.) to send a shot into the net for his third goal within the last two matches.

The AMCATs attempted to cut into their deficit as the match reached the final 10 minutes, but on-target shots by Hezekiah Adeyeye and Iweka Iweka were corralled by Donahue. After being outshot by the Pride in the first half, 9-1, Anna Maria took more shots than Regis in the second half, 6-5.

Donahue finished with three saves as he earned his second shutout of the season. Valter Santiago earned two saves in net for Anna Maria.

The Pride have now won four straight matches for the first time since a four-match winning streak Oct. 8-17, 2018, with the fourth victory also coming against Anna Maria at home five years and one day ago (Oct. 17, 2018). Regis has now moved into eighth place in the GNAC standings with 15 points, with the top 10 teams at the end of the regular season next Tuesday qualifying for the conference tournament.

Regis College (5-9, 5-8 GNAC) hosts Mitchell College Saturday, Oct. 21, starting at 3 p.m., with the Senior Day presentation taking place before the match. Anna Maria College (4-8-1, 4-7-1 GNAC) travels to face New England College Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.
