Men’s Soccer Extends Winning Streak to Three with 5-2 Victory

WESTON, Mass. - Once again, the Regis College offensive attack took control from close to the start of the match, as the Pride produced its highest scoring total in five years on the way to a 5-2 victory over Colby-Sawyer College Monday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer match at Regis Stadium.

The Pride gained possession right away and started to pepper the Charger net with shots, but Colby-Sawyer goalie Alex Gomez-Agudelo collected four saves within the first 23 minutes of the match. In the 25th minute, Jeremiah Frias (San Diego, Calif.) sent a corner kick into the box, and Federico Lavini-Ayalla (Weston, Fla.) was able to guide a header into the net for his first goal of the season.

Two minutes later, the Regis offensive pressure, especially from Paco De Juan (San Juan, Puerto Rico), confused the Charger defense, as the ball hit off a defender into the net for an own goal. The Pride outshot the Chargers in the first half 11-1 as the home team brought a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Pride put the match away early in the second half thanks to Michael Arguelles (Miami, Fla.), who scored the first two goals of his collegiate career within an eight-minute span. He took a pass from Frias in the 50th minute and converted on a shot for his first goal, and then it was Lavini-Ayalla who set him up in the 57th minute for his second tally.

The Chargers did not give up, breaking through two minutes after Arguelles's second goal when Brayden Rapoza collected a loose ball and slid the ball inside the left post. Regis responded in the 67th minute off yet another long throw-in by Stephen Allsopp II (Medford, Mass.), as Lavini-Ayalla's touch found Callum Park (Providenciales, Turks & Caicos) rushing up the field and Park sent the ball into the net.

Colby-Sawyer drew a free kick in the 85th minute, and Ryan Wilson sent the ball into the box, where Kaden Lewis was able to connect on a header for the final goal of the night. The Chargers tied the Pride in shots in the second half, 8-8.

Ethan Donahue (Methuen, Mass.) started in net for the Pride and played just over 66 minutes before being relieved by Kyle Weidemann (Piscataway, N.J.), who made two saves during his time on the pitch. Gomez-Agudelo finished with six saves for the Chargers.

For the Pride, it was their highest scoring match since a 5-0 victory over Becker College Oct. 13, 2018. It is also the first three-match winning streak for Regis since it started the 2021 season with victories over Mass Maritime, Lesley, and Anna Maria Sept. 4-11, 2021.

Regis College (4-9, 4-8 GNAC) hosts Anna Maria College Wednesday, Oct. 18, starting at 6 p.m. at Regis Stadium. Colby-Sawyer College (2-9-4, 1-7-4 GNAC) heads to Maine to face Saint Joseph's College Tuesday, Oct. 17, beginning at 6 p.m.
