Men’s Soccer Starts Homestand with 1-0 GNAC Win

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College pressed its offensive attack right from the start, eventually earning a goal early in the second half and holding on to defeat Dean College, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer match at Regis Stadium.

Just 48 seconds into the second half, the Pride took advantage of a long throw-in for the second consecutive match, as a throw by Stephen Allsopp II (Medford, Mass.) found its way to the right side of the goal mouth. Riley Stogsdill (San Diego, Calif.) redirected the ball into the net for his first career collegiate goal to put the home team on top.

With 10 minutes gone in the second half, Melvin Alves took the ball on a breakaway from midfield, but Regis keeper Ethan Donahue (Methuen, Mass.) was able to clear the ball away, and the follow-up shot by Shavar Champagnie sailed wide right.

The Bulldogs continued to pressure the Pride, with Donohue turning away an on-target shot by Sean Doherty in the 75th minute. Meanwhile, Regis threatened to extend its advantage just over a minute later, but Dean goalie Alberto Gonzalez Del Rio was able to make a diving save on a shot by Paco De Juan (San Juan, Puerto Rico), keeping the visitors within one goal.

Alves earned another scoring opportunity in the 82nd minute, but Donahue made his sixth and final save of the afternoon on the way to his first career collegiate shutout. Gonzalez Del Rio finished with four saves, all coming in the second half as he kept the Bulldogs in the match.

Regis outshot Dean, 15-12, with four different Pride players earning two shots apiece. Alves led all players with three shots, while Seamus Doherty and Juliano Silva taking two shots each.
