Men’s Soccer Loses at USJ

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Regis College lost to the University of Saint Joseph, 5-1, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer match at the USJ Soccer Field.

In the 15th minute, Cade Bretton (Burlington, Vt.) stole the ball from the Blue Jays and advanced it up the field, avoiding a couple of USJ defenders in the process. He passed the ball to Nolan McMahon (White River Junction, Vt.), who curved a shot inside the left post for his first career collegiate goal.

USJ (9-1-1, 7-1-1 GNAC) answered back in the 19th minute when Juan Torres stole the ball close to the 18-yard box and launched a shot into the upper right corner of the net. The Blue Jays would take the lead with 18 minutes left in the first half as Torres entered a corner kick into the box and Emmanuel Ofori sent a header inside the right post.

The Blue Jays added a goal in the 58th minute when Michael Torres successfully challenged Regis goalie Ethan Donahue (Methuen, Mass.) on a clearing attempt, collected the loose ball, and put it into the open net. In the 66th minute, Matthew Dima worked his way past the Pride defense and blasted a shot into the net to extend the USJ advantage to three goals. USJ scored again in the 81st minute as Juan Torres sent a free kick to Michael Torres, who converted for his second goal of the match.

USJ enjoyed an 18-9 shot advantage, including a 10-6 edge in shots on goal, led by Michael Torres with seven total shots. Riley Stogsdill (San Diego, Calif.) took three shots, two of them on goal, to lead the Pride.

Jose Miguel Garcia Martin made four saves as he earned the victory in net for the Blue Jays, while Donahue finished with three saves in close to 78 minutes on the field before Caleb Russo (Brookfield, N.H.) played the final 12 minutes and earned two saves.

Regis College (1-9, 1-8 GNAC) plays its final road match of the regular season with the short trip to face Lasell University Wednesday, Oct. 11, beginning at 4 p.m. The Pride will conclude the regular season with five straight home matches over the span of 11 days.
