Men’s Soccer Falls in GNAC Home Match

WESTON, Mass. - After an exchange of penalty kick goals kept Saturday's match tied heading into halftime, University of Saint Joseph scored three second half goals to defeat Regis College, 4-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at Regis Stadium.

The play went back and forth throughout the first half, with USJ striking first in the 20th minute when the Blue Jays drew a foul in the box and DeAnte Anderson converted on a penalty kick. Less than one-and-a-half minutes later, it was Regis' turn to draw a foul in the box, with Santiago Pedraza Novak (Bogota, Colombia) knocking his penalty kick opportunity past the USJ goalie to tie the match.

Both teams created scoring opportunities as the first half continued, but nothing was successful, keeping the match knotted at 1-1 at halftime. Just over two minutes into the second half, Dane Stephens forced a Pride turnover and waited for Mergim Kutllovci to join the play before making the pass that led to Kutllovci's goal.

The Blue Jays extended their lead in the 70th minute as Anthony Delacruz's long pass found Henry McGarragh V running up the field, with McGarrah sliding the ball into the net for his first goal of the season. Another long pass in the 87th minute, this time by Jin Chen, found Benjamin Marchetti, who converted on his scoring chance.

Jose Miguel Garcia Martin played over 73 minutes in net and earned the victory for the Blue Jays. Freddie Beckmann (Franklin, Mass.) finished with eight saves for the Pride. USJ outshot Regis, 19-12, and earned nine corner kick opportunities while the Pride picked up two corner kick chances.
