Men’s Soccer Falls in Conference Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Regis College men's soccer team was unable to overcome their conference foe Johnson & Wales, falling to the Wildcats, 5-0, Saturday afternoon in the GNAC opener for both squads at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex.

The first goal of the game came in the first half off a header from Riley McNicholas, who was able to find the pass off a free kick from JP Rioux to score. With the Wildcats up, another goal was scored in the 32nd minute of the match when Nick Gutekunst was able to find the back of the net off another pass from Rioux.

In the 42nd minute, Gutekunst scored again, with Alexi Flores getting the assist, putting the Wildcats up going into halftime, 3-0. Johnson & Wales would add two goals in the second half on tallies by Rioux and Teagan Drake.

Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) led the Pride with four total shots, while Gutekunst had five total shots for the Wildcats as Johnson & Wales outshot Regis, 17-9. Jesse Bonilla (Ramona, Calif.) played the first 72:25 in net for Regis, making three saves, while Nicholas Mancini earned the victory for the Wildcats, earning three saves of his own before being replaced midway through the second half.

The Pride (2-1, 0-1 GNAC) will be back in action Tuesday, Sept. 11, when they travel to Emmanuel for a GNAC contest starting at 7 p.m. They will not play at home again until Wednesday, Sept. 26, against Suffolk beginning at 4 p.m.
