WINTHROP, Mass. - Juniors Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Litchie Barbosa (Boston, Mass.) of the Regis (Mass.) men's soccer team have been named to the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference Second Team. Senior Collin Thurston (Temecula, Calif.) also got an all-conference nod, as he was named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team. The announcement came from the conference office on Monday.
Triana already held the men's soccer program's all-time goal-scoring record entering the 2017 season, but set the program's single-season goal scoring record this season with 16 to widen his lead. Triana's 16 goals ranked second in the conference only behind Saint Joseph's (Me.)'s Brett Mattos, who was named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Year, with 19. In 18 games for the Pride this season, Triana also tied for second on the team with four assists, was a one-time recipient of the GNAC Player of the Week Award and was named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team. It is the second consecutive season Triana has been named to the All-Conference Second Team, as he did the same in 2016 when the Pride was still in the New England Collegiate Conference. He was also Third Team All-NECC as a freshman.
Barbosa also had a historic season for the Pride, setting new single-season and all-time assist records. It took Barbosa just nine games to record eight assists, breaking the previous record of seven by both Dillon Lanctot and Don Gomez during the 2015 season. Barbosa finished the season with 12 assists, ranking second in the conference and tied for 12th nationally, finishing his career with 18 in just two seasons. Barbosa also scored two goals on the season for a total of 16 points. It is Barbosa's second time being named All-Conference for the Pride, as he was First Team All-NECC a year ago.
Thurston tallied one goal and one assist in 17 appearances for the Pride during his senior season, with his one goal coming in a 3-1 win over Suffolk on Sept. 23. Thurston graduates from Regis tied for eighth in program history with 70 career games played. The honor is Thurston's first All-Sportsmanship honor after he was named All-Conference Third Team in the NECC the last two seasons.
The men's soccer team was one of three Regis programs to qualify for GNAC Tournament play this fall, and was the first team to win a GNAC postseason game when it defeated Mount Ida 3-1 in the Quarterfinals on Oct. 29. The Pride finished its 2017 season with a record of 10-8-2 and advanced to the GNAC Semifinals in its first season in the conference.
