Men's Soccer Drops 3-0 Decision to Saint Joseph's (Me.)

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) men's soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to a close on Wednesday afternoon, as the Pride fell 3-0 to the Monks of Saint Joseph's College (Me.) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Regis Stadium.

With the loss, the Pride falls to 7-4 on the season, and 4-2 in the GNAC. The Monks remain without a blemish on their record at 9-0-1, 5-0-1 in the GNAC.

The Pride and the Monks went to the break scoreless after neither team could find the back of the net in the game's opening 45 minutes. The Monks outshot the Pride 8-1 in the period, but Regis goalkeeper Jesse Bonilla (Ramona, Calif.) turned away the only three shots on target to keep the game scoreless.

The Monks wasted no time opening the scoring in the beginning of the second half. Just over four and a half minutes into the period, defender Sean Baker (Medfield, Mass.) got his head to a Cody Elliott (Gorham, Maine) corner kick and calmly nodded it past Bonilla for the game's opening score.

The score was still 1-0 Monks in the 76th minute when the visitors delivered the goal that took all the wind out of the Pride's sails. Junior Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) recorded his 11th goal of the season after dancing through the Pride defense. After working his way into the middle of the box, Mattos fired a shot to the bottom right corner of the net, freezing Bonilla and giving the Monks a 2-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Saint Joseph's added an insurance marker, as Jesse Ramirez (Dumont, N.J.) recorded his third goal of the season to stretch the lead to 3-0

Bonilla was credited with the loss for the Pride, making eight saves. With one save, the Monks' Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) picked up the win in goal.

The Pride will return to the pitch on Saturday evening when they travel up to Norwich for a 6:00 p.m. start. The Monks will be back in action the same day as they host Rivier at 1:30 p.m.
