Triana Nets Two, Men’s Soccer Edges Anna Maria In GNAC Opener

PAXTON, Conn. - Midfielder Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) continued his early season scoring spree, finding the net twice to lift the Regis (Mass.) men's soccer team to 3-2 win at Anna Maria in the program's first Great Northeast Athletic Conference game, Saturday at AMCAT Stadium.

Triana scored a pair in his team's season opening win over Eastern Nazarene but was inactive for the Pride's overtime loss to Lesley. He picked up right where he left off though, scoring in the 54th and 74th minutes to help the Pride improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the GNAC.

The Pride led for nearly the entire first half after earning a penalty kick in the second minute. David Venegas (Escondido, Calif.) calmly converted the spot kick to put Regis up 1-0. The Pride entered halftime with the lead but the Anna Maria equalizer came less than five minutes into the second half. Nick Lawrence (Attleboro, Mass.) took a pass from Connor Francis (Colchester, Conn.) and scored past Pride keeper Jesse Bonilla (Ramona, Calif.) to tie the game.

Triana answered almost immediately to score what proved to be the gamewinner. Devin Brady (Springfield, Vt.) fed him a ball which he slotted in the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Triana's second goal gave the Pride some necessary insurance. Gift Kalombo (Worcester, Mass.) scored for the AMCATS (1-2-1, 0-1 GNAC) in the 80th minute but the Pride kept the scoresheet clean for the final 10 minutes to earn the win.

Regis next takes the field this Wednesday, Sept. 13, traveling to Fitchburg State for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. Anna Maria plays at Eastern Connecticut State the same day with its kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
