Men's Soccer Edged By Dean College, 1-0

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) men's soccer team put forth a solid effort against a talented Dean College side but were unable to come away with a result, narrowly falling to the Bulldogs 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at Regis Stadium.

Leandro Alves' (Pawtucket, R.I.) provided the lone goal of the match, scoring in the 74th minute for the Bulldogs who improved to 13-1 in their final season before making the move to Division III.

It was clear from the outset the Pride (9-5-1) were going to sit in and look to counter. On several occasions in the first half, Regis was able to dispossess Dean and look toward goal but an attack never materialized. The Pride proved to be strong in the back with Emiky Pires (Boston, Mass.) and Dillon Lanctot (Somersworth, N.H.) making several solid plays in their own defensive third.

The Pride had several close calls particularly in the final five minutes of the half. Samuel Fonseca (Brockton, Mass.) gained possession inside the box but his shot went off the near post. Dean was later awarded a free kick at the top of the box with just over a minute to play but couldn't connect and the half ended scoreless.

Regis had to weather a serious Bulldog storm early in the second half. Dean got into the box on several occasions put the Pride central defense was equal to the task. Suddenly, Regis countered as Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) received a pass down the right flank, touching a pass central that Daniel Calderone (Wellesley, Mass.) shot just wide of the post. Triana then had a bid of his own which was saved off the line by Dean keeper Karim Mokhtar (Middleburg, Fla.).

After repeated attacks down both flanks, Dean earned a penalty kick when Otto Sahlen (Gothenburg, Sweden) cut into the box and was taken down by Pires. Alves stepped up to take the spot kick but promptly shot it off the crossbar and Regis dodged a bullet.

Alves made up for miscue less than a minute later. Sahlen again had the ball on the flank and slipped a pass behind the Pride defense that Alves slid on to and poked inside the far post to put the Bulldogs up 1-0 in the 74th minute. The goal was the first surrendered by the Pride since Sept. 28, a span of nearly six games.

The Pride return to conference play on Saturday, Oct. 22 for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff at Mitchell. Dean returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 23 hosting SUNY Delhi at 2:00 p.m.
