Men's Soccer Shuts Out Newbury, Extends Win Streak to Four

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) men's soccer team picked up their sixth win in as many tries at Regis Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as the Pride bested Newbury College by a score of 2-0.

With the win, Regis improves to 7-4-0 on the season (2-0-0 NECC), while the Nighthawks see their record fall to 7-4-1 (1-1-0 NECC).

Regis sophomore Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) tallied his third goal in the last two games to open the scoring on Saturday. In the 17th minute, the midfielder received a feed from junior forward Brendan Plasczynski (Bristol, Conn.), before streaking down the left side and beating the keeper to make the score 1-0. The goal was Triana's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The 1-0 score held for the majority of the match, thanks in large part to stifling defense from both teams. In all, the teams combined for just six shots on goal.

A huge stop from Newbury sophomore goalkeeper Jarrod Smith (Watertown, N.Y.) kept the score 1-0 in the 55th minute. On another Triana breakaway, Smith came out to cut down the sophomore's angle and stopped a shot labeled for the bottom corner of the net.

There was nothing Smith (three saves) could do however, in the 82nd minute, when Zach Sindoni (Haverhill, Mass.) put the final nail in the coffin. Triana played a through ball from the left side to a wide open Sindoni, before the senior beat Smith low to the near post. The goal served to put the game out of reach and give Regis their second win in conference play.

Regis goalkeeper Manny Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) made one save in his second shutout of the season.

Next up for the Pride, they'll travel to New Hampshire to take on Daniel Webster next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Nighthawks return to action on Tuesday against Fisher to kick off a three-game home stand.
