BALANCED OFFENSE PROPELS PRIDE TO NECC WIN

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's soccer team used goals from four different players to earn a 4-0 shutout victory against New England Collegiate Conference opponent Mitchell College on an cool, overcast afternoon at Regis Stadium. The win, propels the Pride to 9-6-1, 3-3-0 NECC and the loss drops the Mariners to 7-7-1, 4-2-0 NECC.

The match was a physical affair as there were 37 fouls combined between the two squads as well as one yellow card issued to each team.

Mitchell had the first opportunity to open the scoring in the contest during the seventh minute of play when freshman midfielder Andris Vital (Norwich, Conn.) split the Pride defense right down the middle of the pitch for a clear shot on goal. Vital lofted a shot attempt towards the cage, but Pride goaltender Manny Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) punched the ball away and out of danger.

Regis responded with the next three scoring chances, each one was high or wide. Their best chance of the first half came as sophomore midfielder Amandio Ferreira (Dorchester, Mass.) took a free kick chance after a yellow card on senior defender Zach Rocheleau (Westminster, Mass.). Ferreira roped a laser right to Mariner goaltender Romer Ochoa (Uncasville, Conn.) who made the save, but the ball ricocheted out to Pride midfielder Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.). Triana, made a quick move and rifled a shot that hit the post and bounced out of bounds to end the Pride scoring threat.

10 minutes later, Andris Vital connected on a give-and-go with teammate Andrew Nigro (East Granby, Conn.) who fired a shot towards the cage that was eventually corralled by Santiago for another save.

The Pride finally scored during the 39th minute after senior captain Renato Rosas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) converted a penalty shot that was awarded after teammate Daniel Calderone (Wellesley, Mass.) was tackled in the box. Rosas' fourth goal of the season gave the Crimson and Gold the 1-0 lead heading into the intermission.

The Pride wouldn't look back as they took advantage of a goalie change and scored three goals during the second stanza. Daniel Calderone tallied his second goal of the campaign a minute into the new period after he corralled a loose save that popped in the air after an Amandio Ferreira shot and ripped a one-timer into the bottom right of the net.

Dillon Lanctot (Somersworth, N.H.) made a beautiful pass to Derek Triana who was streaking down the left side of the pitch and the freshman buried his shot attempt pass the outstretched Anthony Drake (Wethersfield, Conn.) for his team-leading seventh goal of the year.

Four minutes after Triana's goal, Mauro Barbosa (Dorchester, Mass.) added one of his own as he dangled the ball to the top left corner of the box, stopped and pegged a shot into the bottom right of the net for his second goal of the season.

Manny Santiago made six saves during the shutout victory and earned his 9th win of the season. Romer Ochoa started in goal, made one save and played 32:26 before leaving due to injury. Anthony Drake came on to replace the injured goaltender and made five saves in the cage.

Regis returns to action on Wednesday, October 28th for a Senior Day contest against NECC opponent Wheelock at 4:00 p.m. while Mitchell heads home to welcome Lesley to campus for a 3:00 p.m. contest with the Lynx on the 28th.
