EAGLES SOAR PAST PRIDE, 4-2

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College held a 2-1 lead headed into halftime, but could not hold off Daniel Webster College as the Eagles rallied for a 4-2 victory in New England Collegiate Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon in Weston, Mass. The Eagles improve to 10-3 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the NECC, while the Pride drop back to .500 at 6-6-1 and fall to 0-3 in league matches.

Regis had a chance to strike early as Daniel Webster turned the ball over inside their own box, and Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) ended up with the ball on his feet in front of the net, but the freshman's attempt sailed high.

The Eagles took over possession of the game led by the play of Joseano Tavares (Lawrence, Mass.). In the 8th minute, Tavares played a through ball to Marcos Vieira Filho (Recife, Penambuco), who had snuck past the back line for an open shot, but Manny Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) came off his line to break up the pass before Vieira Filho could get a shot off. Tavares nearly put the Eagles on top six minutes later as he worked the ball into the box and beat Santiago opposite post, but Christian Mukala (Malden, Mass.) slid in front of the goal line and knocked the ball out of bounds to keep DWC off the board.

Mukala would give the Pride a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the game as Dillon Lanctot (Somersworth, N.H.) forced his way through three defenders and played a low cross in front of the goal line. Mukala was there on the back post for his third goal of the year to put Regis on top, 1-0.

Daniel Webster had the answer less than four minutes later as Ian Hutchinson (Litchfield, N.H.) dribbled his way through the Pride defense and down the end line. The junior slipped a pass in front to a wide open Tavares and the freshman hit a ball just outside the outstretched arms of Santiago to knot the score at 1-1.

The Pride wasted no time with a response as less than two minutes later Lanctot played a through ball to Brendan Plasczynski (Bristol, Conn.). Plasczynski muscled by his defender and then used a nifty dribble move to his left to lose DWC's keeper Sean Hamilton (Brookline, N.H.) and then fired on an open net to give the Pride a 2-1 lead, which they took into the half.

Out of the break, Tavares was up to his old tricks as he found Greg Mashburn (Charlotte, N.C.) with a pass at the top of the box. Mashburn flicked a shot over a sliding Manny Santiago and into the back of the net for the equalizer in the 52nd minute. Tavares added his second assist – and fourth point of the day – only six minutes later as he received a pass from Ian Hutchinson and played a one-touch pass to Vieira Filho down the left side for a rocket goal from 10 yards out that put the Eagles on top 3-2.

Regis had a chance to tie the game in the 74th minute as a free kick from Renato Rosas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) took a big bounce in the box and led to a shot from Collin Thurston (Temecula, Calif.), but Hamilton was there for the stop. Five minutes later, Triana flew down the right side and got a shot off inside of eight feet, but his attempt was blocked away by the Eagles defense. The ball caromed out to Dillon Lanctot who fired a one-timer on net, but that attempt was blocked down as well.

Daniel Webster would add an insurance goal late as Hutchinson played a short pass on a free kick to Eusebio Marote (Lowell, Mass.). Marote fired from 30 yards out and hit the back of the net to give the game its final score of 4-2.

The Eagles held a 19-14 advantage in shots, while both teams attempted five corner kicks. Sean Hamilton improved to 9-2 while making five saves on the afternoon for DWC. Manny Santiago suffered the setback while stopping four shots.

The Crimson and Gold will try and get their first NECC win of the year on Monday afternoon when they travel to Becker College for a 1:00 p.m. game. Daniel Webster will try and make it nine-straight wins next Thursday when they travel to Pine Manor College for a non-league tilt scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
