OWN GOAL DOOMS REGIS

SOMERVILLE, Mass. – The Regis College men's soccer team fell to Newbury College 2-1 in New England Collegiate Conference action on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Pride drop to 5-5-1 and 0-2-0 in NECC play while the Nighthawks improve to 6-6-0 and 2-0-0 in the conference with the win.

Regis jumped on the scoreboard early, scoring a minute into the game. Sophomore Collin Thurston (Temecula, Calif.) found back of the net 10 yards out off a rebound to give the Pride the 1-0 advantage.

Midway through the first half, the Nighthawks had a prime opportunity. Dribbling up the far sideline, junior midfielder Greg Brooks (Amityville, N.Y.) connected with senior forward Emmett Dixon (Monrovia, Liberia) but junior goalkeeper Manny Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) came up with the save.

With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Dixon broke up the right side and connected with sophomore Artur Piatrevich (Fairfield, Conn.) four-yards out for a header that sailed just high of the goal. The Nighthawks looked to even up the match once again with a minute remaining in the first half when junior Prince Boateng (Worcester, Mass.) gunned a line drive into Santiago as the Pride to a 1-0 lead into the break.

Following a corner kick from junior midfielder German Canales (Lynn, Mass.), Boateng knocked a loose ball into the back of the goal from three yards out to put the Nighthawks on the scoreboard and tie up the contest with 21 minutes remaining in the second half.

The Nighthawks scored the game-winner when Santiago knocked the ball into his own goal with just over eight and half minutes remaining in regulation.

First year goalkeeper Jarrod Smith (Watertown, N.Y.) earned the victory, registering five saves while Santiago took home the loss recording four saves in the process.

The Nighthawks return to the pitch on Friday October 9th when they travel to Lesley University at 8:00 p.m. The Pride will be back in action on Wednesday October 7th when they host non-conference Lasell College at 7:30 p.m.
