FERREIRA'S HAT TRICK LEADS PRIDE TO CONFERENCE WIN

WESTON, Mass. – Led by freshman Amandio Ferreira's (Dorchester, Mass.) seven point effort, the Regis College men's soccer team picked up a 6-0 victory against Becker College in New England Collegiate Conference play on Saturday morning. With the victory, the Pride move to 5-10, 2-3 NECC and with the loss, the Hawks drop to 2-14, 0-4 NECC.

The Pride started the game by working the ball down to the Hawks zone during the first five minutes of play resulting in shot opportunities by sophomore forward Don Gomez (Lynn, Mass.) that went wide, and a chance by junior captain Renato Rosas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) which was turned away by Hawks goalie Karl Cameron (Jacksonville, Fla.)

Becker responded with a chance of their own two minutes later when they received their first corner kick opportunity of the game. Ryan Barry (North Attleboro, Mass.) took the corner chance for the Hawks and sent it high and into the box, the ball was then redirected to William Tripp (Aberdeen, Md.) who then booted a shot that was just wide of the net.

Don Gomez took the next two shots for the Pride including a through-ball that was fed by sophomore midfielder Trevor Hamilton (Winchester, Mass.). This left Gomez streaking down the left side of the field for a one-on-one chance with Cameron, but Gomez misfired and the shot went wide of the net which thwarted the Pride scoring chance.

The game ended up being a physical affair as there were four fouls and a yellow card called before the first goal of the contest. After a foul by the Hawks, Amandio Ferreira took a free kick opportunity from outside of the box. Ferreira booted the ball towards the net and Cameron initially got a hand on the ball but it trickled off his fingertips and ended up into the next. The goal was Ferreira's first career collegiate goal and gave the Pride a 1-0 advantage.

Becker had a chance to knot up the score at the 34:02 mark after a Jonathan Keefe (Southwick, Mass.) corner kick chance, but the Pride defense denied the Hawks any shots and the ball was cleared away. Ferreira struck again in 37th minute as Becker was called for another foul. The ball was placed at the top of the box again and Ferreira buried the free kick chance into the top right of the net. The goal was Ferreira's second of the contest and the Pride's lead grew to 2-0.

The Hawks drove the ball down to the Pride's zone right before half looking for a quick goal to cut their deficit. Becker had their team set up in the box and the ball was crossed to Hawk's defender Michael Miklos (Brooklyn, N.Y.) who headed it towards the net, but his header attempt was wide and the Hawks went into the intermission down 2-0. Regis outshot Becker 11-2 during the first half but the Hawks held the advantage in corner kicks 3-2.

The Pride kept up the pressure during the second half and hung up a four spot on the visitors. During the 49:12 mark, Ferreira, crossed the ball from about the 35 yard line into the box to freshman forward Jefferson Lorimer (Lynn, Mass.). Lorimer jumped as high as he could and headed the ball that found the back of the net. The goal was Lorimer's first goal of the season, his first career goal and advanced the Pride lead to 3-0. Senior forward Nana Kwarteng (Milford, Mass.) also added a goal when he ran through the right side of the box, ripped a shot that was initially denied by the keeper, but the rebound landed right on Kwarteng's foot and he booted it home for his first goal on the year. The Pride's lead grew to 4-0.

At the 67:23 mark, Ferreira showed his free kick prowess again as he earned a hat trick with his third free kick goal of the contest. He buried this one in the top right corner of the net. That goal increased the Pride lead to 5-0. Don Gomez scored his team leading fourth goal of the season near the end of the game when he ran through the Becker defense, streaked down the field for a one-on-one chance with the goalie and buried his shot in the net.

The Hawks were outshot by the Pride 23-5 during the contest and both teams had the equal number of corner kicks. Dillon Lanctot (Somersworth, N.H.) made two saves and earned a shutout victory. Karl Cameron stopped eight shots and earned the loss. Matthew Castro (Shirley, Mass.) made two saves in a relief appearance in goal for the Hawks.

Regis and Becker both host their next matches. The Pride welcome non-conference foe Wheelock College on Wednesday, October 22nd in Weston, Mass with game-time is slated for 7:30 p.m. Becker hosts conference rival Lesley University on Tuesday, October 21st with kick-off set for 4:00 p.m.
