REGIS LEADS EARLY, BUT ANCHORMEN SINK PRIDE, 5-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Regis College freshman Collin Thurston (Temecula, Calif.) recorded his first career goal to give the Pride an early 1-0 advantage, but Rhode Island College stormed back to post a 5-1 win over the Pride on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action.

Regis (1-4) took the early lead when junior midfielder Renato Rosas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) sent in a free kick from 40 yards out to freshman defender Collin Thurston (Temecula, CA), who had snuck behind the Rhode Island College (3-3) defense, to tap in an open net goal at 14:04 of the first half.

Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, R.I.) answered for the Anchormen with a penalty kick in the 30th minute to tie the game at 1-1. After making a move to avoid a defender, Asiedu was one-on-one with Regis sophomore goalkeeper Manny Calderon (Bristol, Conn.) before he was taken down and awarded the penalty kick.

RIC went ahead, 2-1, in the 43rd minute when junior forward Jose Zarraga's (Providence, RI) crossing pass in the box was inadvertently kicked into the Pride net by the Regis defense.

Komla Dolby (Providence, R.I.) scored the first of back-to-back goals at the 49:11 mark, assisted by David Ricci (Smithfield, R.I.) on a pass down the right side of the field, to push the RIC lead to 3-1. His second goal of the afternoon, assisted by freshman defender Gabriel Paiz (North Providence, R.I.) at the 74:58 mark, put the game out of reach. The Anchormen tallied their last goal in the 85th minute when Zarraga nodded home the ball following a long throw-in by senior forward Kevin Stone (Wakefield, R.I.).

Calderon made 10 saves in the game while suffering the setback.

Regis is back in action on Monday afternoon when they host Anna Maria College at 4:30 p.m.
