FALCONS CLAW PAST PRIDE 4-0

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis College men's soccer team was dealt a defeat Saturday afternoon by the hands of non-conference foe Albertus Magnus College, 4-0 at Regis Stadium on a sunny and extremely hot and humid day. With the loss, the Pride fall to 1-2 on the young season while the Falcons, 2-0-1, picked up their second win and remain undefeated on the year.

The Pride dug themselves into an early hole as they allowed three goals and were outshot 8-1 during the opening half of play. Albertus Magnus' first tally of the afternoon came five minutes into the game as Lindsley Barrett (Shelton, Conn.) kicked a cross into the box that was headed by freshman forward Matt Stoll (Shelton, Conn.). Stoll's header hit the top crossbar and took a weird bounce, just out of the reach of Pride goalkeeper Manny Calderon (Bristol, Conn) and into the net and gave the Falcons the early 1-0 advantage.

The next score for the Falcons came at 17:34 as sophomore forward Alexis Garcia (West Haven, Conn.) made a fine defensive play at midfield, slide-tackling the ball away from a Regis player, streaking down the middle of the Pride defense and found himself with an one-on-one opportunity with the goalie. Garcia took advantage of his chance as the shot went into the lower right corner of the net increasing the Falcons lead to 2-0.

Albertus Magnus's third goal of the first half came at the 31st minute as freshman midfielder Justyn Broderick (Orange, Conn.), who just missed wide on a previous shot attempt seconds before, chipped a shot that was just over the head of Calderon and landed in the left side of the net. That goal gave Albertus Magnus the 3-0 led heading into the break.

During the second half, Regis had their chances and outshot the Falcons by an 8-5 margin, but couldn't cut into the lead. The Pride's first opportunity came in the 48th minute as junior captain Renato Rosas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) had a chance just outside the box and took a shot that just sailed over the top of the crossbar. Regis had another chance after a throw-in during the 71st minute as freshman forward Jefferson Lorimer (Lynn, Mass.) found himself faced with an open net, ripped a shot that ended up being blocked by a Falcons defender.

Albertus Magnus capped off the scoring as Barrett cranked a shot from the box that hit the left post, but then was put in the back right corner of the net by Broderick, who was waiting for a rebound, for his second goal of the contest.

The Falcons held the shot advantage over the Pride by outshooting them 13-9 during the game. Each squad had four corner kick opportunities as well. Freshman Griffin Volta earned the shutout victory and moved to 2-0-1 on the year while making four saves. For the Pride, Manny Calderon was charged with the loss and fell to 0-2 on the year while making five saves.

Regis is back in action on Wednesday, September 10th when they travel to Henniker, N.H. to square off against the New England College Pilgrims with kickoff slated for 4:00 p.m.
