FIDALGO LEADS REGIS PAST MOUNT IDA, 1-0

WESTON, Mass. – Senior Josh Fidalgo's (Dorchester, Mass.) goal less than four minutes into the second period helped propel Regis College past Mount Ida 1-0 in non-conference play on Thursday night. The Pride improves to 1-0 on the young season while the Mustangs fall to 0-1. Regis head coach Renato Capobianco picked up his first win at the helm of the men's soccer team.

Both teams played to a draw in the first half as neither team could muster much offense. The teams traded shots and corners in the period but none of them found their mark. The Pride had their first real attempt on net when Shawn McDonough (Darmstadt, Germany) received a corner kick from Ricardo Arguetta (Los Angeles, Calif.), but McDonough's header sailed wide of its target, leaving the score tied at zero. Both teams ended the period with five shots apiece and both goalkeepers made a pair of saves while Mount Ida held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

In the second frame, Regis wasted no time to grab the lead as Shawn McDonough played a cross to the top of the box to an open Fidalgo who blasted the ball to the bottom right corner and gave Regis a 1-0 lead.

Mount Ida would have several chances to tie the score over the final 40 minutes of play. The Mustangs' Kevin Custodio (Dartmouth, Mass.) forced a misplayed header into a turnover and streaked towards the goal in a one-on-one with Regis netminder Andrew LaMacchia (Lynn, Mass.). LaMacchia met Custodio head on at the top of the box, however, and slid to the ground to thwart the attempt by Custodio.

With just over nine minutes to play the Mustangs had another great opportunity on a free kick by Gilberto Alvarenga (Marlborough, Mass.). Alvarenga played a perfectly placed ball to the opposite goal post right on the foot of Nick Rivas-Vasquez (Hamden, Conn.) but LaMacchia was there to cut down the shot and preserve the Regis one goal margin. Mount Ida would try several more times to get the ball into the box but they were turned away by the Regis defense as the Pride held on for its first win.

Andrew LaMacchia picked up his first victory of the season while making four saves on the evening. Mount Ida's Mat Pils (Monroe, Conn.) suffered the setback while making five saves.

The Cardinal and Gold return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host the first annual Pride Cup this weekend featuring Suffolk, William Paterson and Newbury College. Regis takes on Suffolk University at 3:30 p.m. in the second game of the day. Mount Ida looks to grab its first win of the season as the Mustangs travel to the campus of Lesley College on Sunday, September 4th for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
