PRIDE POUNCES PAST RAMS IN OT-THRILLER

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's soccer team needed double overtime to take down visiting Suffolk University, 2-1, on day one of the Pride Cup Invite held on the campus of Regis College on Saturday afternoon. The Pride improve to 2-0 on the season while the Rams drop to 0-1. Senior Josh Fidalgo (Dorchester, Mass.) played the hero again as he received a corner kick from Angel Aguilar (Silver Springs, Md.) and headed the ball into the back of the net for the 2-1 win.

The Pride got on the board first in the fourteenth minute of the first period when Ricardo Arguetta (Los Angeles, Calif.) found an open seam in the Rams defense and set up Nick Tavares (Bellingham, Mass.) on the crease for an uncontested header to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Pride. The Rams rallied back in the twentieth minute when Babacar Sembene (Dakar, Senegal) converted a pass from Michael Missouri (Moss, Norway) to even the score at 1-1.

The teams continued to jockey for ball control throughout the first period. The Pride were able to get off two solid shots from Angel Aguilar (Silver Springs, Md.) but could not capitalize, leaving the score 1-1 headed into the half.

The Rams opened the second period with a barrage of wide shots from Andres Cohen (Caracas, Venezuela) but could not find the back of the net. The Pride's goaltender Andrew LaMacchia (Lynn, Mass.) came up with a key save on Niang Djibril (Dakar, Senegal) midway through the second period to keep the score at 1-1. The Rams defense continued to play strong under the goalkeeping play of James Potter (North Kingston, R.I.) who came up with three saves in the second period.

The Pride tried to finish off the Rams in the final :30 seconds of regulation when Jeffrie Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) cranked a hard cross field shot but missed high. The game would need overtime to decide who would move on in the Pride Cup Invite.

After an uneventful first overtime, both teams powered into the second overtime period. The Pride pushed the ball into the Rams defensive end in the final three minutes of play and were awarded a corner kick after Angel Aguilar's shot from 35 yards out glanced off Potter's glove and off the crossbar. Aguilar played a direct corner kick to Josh Fidalgo who headed the ball top corner and sealed the deal for the Pride who won the game 2-1.

The Cardinal and Gold return to action on Sunday when they host William Paterson University at 3:30 p.m. to decide who will take home the Pride Cup. Suffolk will take on Newbury College at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game after the Nighthawks fell to William Paterson, 7-0, in game one.
