Men's Basketball Rallies For Key Road Win At Suffolk

BOSTON - Roger Hamel (Huntington Beach, Calif.) led all scorers with 19 points and Shaun Wingfield (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) shattered his career high with 18 points off the bench to rally the Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team past Suffolk 66-62 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Saturday at Regan Gymnasium.

The Pride (11-10, 8-5 GNAC) bounced back from a crushing defeat at Lasell for a key road win to remain in the middle of the GNAC playoff pack. Regis trailed by as many as 12 points in the second half before slowly chipping away and holding Suffolk scoreless for over six minutes during the comeback mount.

Michael Hagopian (Watertown, Mass.) and Brendan Mulson (Albany, N.Y.) did the scoring for Suffolk (11-10, 6-6 GNAC) who led for much of the game. They put up 18 and 16 points, respectively, as the Rams trailed only once en route to building a 47-35 cushion just over five minutes into the second half. That would all change after Hamel's three pointer capped a 13-0 run and gave his team its first lead since early in the game.

The teams would go at it down the stretch. Suffolk scored two straight baskets to take a four-point lead but Juvens Dalger (Oakland Park, Fla.) nailed a triple to keep the Pride in the game with 4:16 to play. Wingfield and Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.) would start to heat up, both hitting a pair of jumpers inside of two minutes with Wedderburn's second giving the Pride a five-point lead with 1:21 to play.

The Rams could not find the range down the stretch while a pair of made free throws by Hamel with 11 seconds remaining all but ending the game.

The Pride next hosts Saint Joseph's (Me.) this Tuesday, Feb. 6 in what will be a pivotal matchup with the Monks. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Suffolk hosts Anna Maria on the same day and time.
