CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman forward Sam Jean-Gilles (Melrose, Mass.) registered a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds, and junior guard Osanto Marc Jr. (Kissimmee, Fla.) added a game-high 17 points to lift the Regis College men's basketball team to a 69-58 win over New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opponent Wheelock College on Thursday evening. The win marks the Pride's fifth straight as they improve to 8-10 overall, 7-3 NECC.
Regis shot a modest 43.5% (20-46) from the floor, but outrebounded Wheelock 41-26, and also edged the Wildcats in points in the paint 34-24.
Down 40-30 at halftime, Wheelock was able to chip away at the deficit, cutting the lead to five after a freshman forward Anthony Williams (White Plains, N.Y.) layup with 9:51 on the clock. That was as close as Wheelock would get, however, as Regis put together a 17-8 run the rest of the way, including five clutch free-throws from senior guard Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.) to seal the victory.
The first half was a back-and-fourth affair, as the lead changed hands four times. Marc Jr. netted 11 first-half points and got the Pride out to a quick lead, scoring the games first four points.
After knotting up the game three times, Wheelock took a short-lived lead at the 9:50 mark, as senior guard Paul Coucci (Dartmouth, Mass.) knocked down a three-pointer, giving the Wildcats a 20-19 lead. The teams then traded baskets with Wheelock taking the lead one more time with 7:11 to go in the half before Regis closed out the half with a 19-9 run and a 10-point lead.
