RYAN CHAMBERS NAMED REGIS COLLEGE OUTSTANDING FIRST-YEAR STUDENT-ATHLETE

Weston, Mass.—The Regis College Athletics Department announced Ryan Chambers as the Outstanding First-Year Student-Athlete during its annual athletic awards banquet.

Chambers, a freshman from Abington, Massachusetts, joined the men’s basketball team after graduating from Abington High School.

Chambers played in all 27 games for Regis College, and helped lead the Pride to its best finish (15-12) in its four-year existence.

Regis College also reached The Commonwealth Coast Conference and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournaments following its regular season. Both tournaments were first time appearances for the Pride.

The Abington native was the fourth leading scorer on the team with an average of 8.8 points per game, and posted a career-high 18 points versus the University of New England. In that same game Chambers hit a clutch three-pointer at the buzzer to top the Nor’easters (video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZ1abpydYgk) 66-64 in conference play.

Chambers posted double figures 14 times, and scored a season-high 18 points on two occasions. Opposing teams knew of his talents before each game, and quite often coaches screamed to “shooter” to their players on the court when Chambers touched the ball.

Most often taking shots from behind the three-point arc, where he had a team-high 38.9 percentage, he was as consistent from the free-throw line where he shot 86.7 percent.

Chambers will be one six anticipated returnees to the team next season. Of those planned to return, Chambers is the leading scorer and second in minutes played (652).

Regis College will compete in the New England Collegiate Conference during the 2011-12 academic year.
