WESTON, Mass. - After a scoreless first half, Regis College took the lead, but Dean College answered and then earned the game-winning tally in overtime as the Bulldogs defeated the Pride, 2-1, Saturday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey match at Regis Stadium.
The action in the first half stayed mainly in the midfield area as the teams combined for just nine shots and three penalty corners in the first 30 minutes of action. Regis picked up its offensive production in the third quarter, beginning with a rush midway through the period that resulted in a shot by Frankie Alley (Gardner, Mass.) that was turned away by Dean goalie Sara Gardner.
With just over three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Alley carried the ball close to the net and sent it towards goal. Izzy Cochrane (Hooksett, N.H.) was able to redirect it past Gardner into the net for her third goal of the season to give the Pride a 1-0 advantage.
One-and-a-half minutes later, the Bulldogs held possession, with a shot by Emily Yazzetti off a penalty corner rolling just wide of the net. After a shot by Sydnee Ramos was stopped by Regis goalie Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.), Emma Gragen collected the rebound and found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the year to tie the match at 1-1 heading into the final period.
Gardner made four saves in the fourth quarter to keep the contest tied, forcing extra time to be played. The Bulldogs drew a penalty corner just over two minutes into the overtime session, on which Yazzetti collected the ball on the right side of the arc and sent a crossing pass to Ramos, who found an opening for the game-winning goal, her third goal of the season.
Gardner finished the match with nine saves, while Martone was credited with four saves for the Pride. Dean finished with more total shots, 16-14, but Regis ended up with more shots on goal, 10-6, led by Ava Costello (North Easton, Mass.) and Mackenzie O'Shea (Sharon, Mass.) with three shots on goal apiece.
Regis (3-8, 2-5 GNAC) hosts Clark University Monday, Oct. 14, starting at 1 p.m. in a holiday matinee, with the team's Senior Day presentation scheduled to take place before the match. Dean (7-7, 4-4 GNAC) travels to face Springfield College Thursday, Oct. 17, beginning at 6 p.m.
