Field Hockey Loses at UMass Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - A flurry of goals midway through the second quarter allowed UMass Dartmouth to pull away as the Corsairs eventually defeated Regis College, 5-0, Thursday night in a non-conference collegiate field hockey match at Cressy Field.

UMass Dartmouth (3-3) struck first with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter as Sophia Bouffard set up Jenna Carvalho for her first goal of the match. Less than five minutes into the second quarter, Carvalho scored again to give the Corsairs a 2-0 advantage.

The home team continued to apply the offensive pressure, leading to its third goal just over three minutes later as Carvalho assisted on a tally by Maggie McCafferty. A little more than two minutes later, McCafferty would earn an assist on a goal by Kenzie Bliven.

The Pride put together an offensive threat in the final minute of the first half as Frankie Alley (Gardner, Mass.) took four shots, but two of them were off-target and the other two were turned away by Corsair keeper Shane Cueman.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Corsairs earned one final goal close to five minutes into the fourth period as Bouffard scored off an assist from Abby Perry. The Pride had a solid chance to break through late in the period, but Mackenzie O'Shea's (Sharon, Mass.) shot was kicked away by Kelsie Couto.

Sarai Velez (Everett, Mass.) played the entire match in goal for the Pride and finished with six saves. Cueman collected the victory after making three saves in the first half, while Hannah Trombly and Couto each played a quarter after halftime and were credited with one save apiece.

Regis College (1-2) begins Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a trip to face Elms College Wednesday, Sept. 18, for a 7 p.m. start. The Pride then welcome Simmons University for their first home match in three weeks Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning at 10 a.m.
