Pride Field Hockey Opens Season with Shutout Victory
WESTON, Mass. - Regis College controlled play throughout the afternoon, collecting three goals while allowing just one total shot by Gordon College as the Pride defeated the Fighting Scots, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference collegiate field hockey match at Regis Stadium.
The Pride quickly gained possession and immediately started pressuring the Gordon defense, as Mariana Agahigian (Reading, Mass.) sent the ball towards net two minutes into the match. Mackenzie O'Shea (Sharon, Mass.) was able to redirect the ball into the net for her first career collegiate goal.
O'Shea converted again in the second quarter, collecting a loose ball within the arc and finding the back of the net for her second tally of the contest with just over five minutes remaining in the period. The Pride threatened to add to their lead in the third period by drawing five penalty corners and taking eight total shots, but Gordon goalie Allyson Stauffer was able to make six saves to keep her team close heading into the fourth quarter.
Just 32 seconds into the final period, Regis raced up the field as Frankie Alley (Gardner, Mass.) found O'Shea near the goal. O'Shea saw Agahigian trailing the play without a defender and fed the ball to her, and Agahigian converted for her first career collegiate goal to provide insurance for the Pride.
Sarai Velez (Everett, Mass.) and Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.) each played a half in net for the Pride, with Velez picking up the victory. Stauffer finished the match with nine saves, and Emma Darling was credited with a defensive save for the Fighting Scots.
Regis College (1-0) plays its next three matches on the road, starting Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Eastern Connecticut State for a 4 p.m. start. Gordon College (0-2) faces another GNAC school on the road Wednesday, traveling to face Rivier beginning at 7 p.m.
