Field Hockey Falls to Preseason Favorite in GNAC Opener

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College lost to Johnson and Wales University, 12-0, Tuesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey match at Regis Stadium.

Johnson and Wales controlled the play throughout the night, earning 36 total shots and drawing 17 penalty corners. Margaret Johnson worked her way towards the net and scored 1:04 into the match, and then she assisted on a goal by Izzy Ward less than three minutes later to send the Wildcats on their way to victory.

The Wildcats received goals from 10 different players, with Kaitlyn Freeman and Rayne Millett leading the team with two goals and one assist each. Sophia Brea started in net for JWU and played the first half before Rebecca Johnson took over for the second half.

Sarai Velez (Everett, Mass.) started in net for the Pride and finished with six saves in the first quarter, while Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.) played the rest of the match and collected six saves of her own. Macie Mannone (Lunenburg, Mass.) made two defensive saves as the Regis backline attempted to slow down the Wildcat offensive attack.

Regis College (0-4, 0-1 GNAC) hosts UMass Dartmouth Thursday, Sept. 14, starting at 7:30 p.m. Johnson and Wales (4-0, 2-0 GNAC) travels to face Colby-Sawyer Saturday, Sept. 16, beginning at 1 p.m.
