Field Hockey Unable to Prevent Late Goal in GNAC Match

PAXTON, Mass. – Regis College rallied to tie its Great Northeast Athletic Conference match in the fourth quarter, but Anna Maria College responded shortly thereafter and held on to defeat the Pride, 2-1, Thursday night in collegiate field hockey action at Caparso Field.

Down 1-0 after a second quarter goal by Anna Maria's Lexis Medina, the Pride finally tied the match just over six minutes into the fourth quarter as Ava Costello (North Easton, Mass.) raced up the field and sent the ball into the scoring arc. Somehow, the ball found its way into the goal, giving Costello her third tally of the season.

Just over four minutes later, the AMCATS regained the lead for good as Madison-Marie Romano scored on a shot from the left side of the arc after receiving a pass from Chloe Giordano. The home team threatened to add an insurance goal, but Pride goalie Jocelyn White (Wilmington, Mass.) made three saves in the span of less than a minute to keep her team close. However, Regis could not put together another scoring opportunity before time ran out.

The Pride created chances early in the second quarter, but consecutive shots by Gracie Marsh (Orange, Mass.) and Frankie Alley (Gardner, Mass.) were turned away by Anna Maria goalie Hannah Tobey. Tobey also stopped a penalty stroke attempt by Costello in the first minute of the third quarter to prevent the Pride from tying the match at that point in time.

Tobey finished with five saves, while White collected four saves and Olivia Bell (Poland, Maine) helped her with a defensive save. Each team was credited with seven total shots during the match.

Regis College (3-9, 3-4 GNAC) heads to Providence, R.I., to face GNAC leader Johnson and Wales University Saturday, Oct. 15, beginning at 3 p.m.
