Pride Field Hockey Stays with Corsairs in Non-League Tilt

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Regis College stayed with UMass Dartmouth throughout the night, but the Corsairs were able to hold off the Pride for a 3-2 victory Thursday night in a non-conference collegiate field hockey match at Cressy Field.

Just over three minutes into the match, Regis drew its first penalty corner of the night and created a scoring chance, but Morgan Pero's (Hartford, Vt.) shot was stopped by Corsair goalie Hannah Trombly. The action went back-and-forth until late in the first quarter when Kaylie Pereira struck first for the home team off an assist from Jenna Carvalho.

UMass Dartmouth (2-1) threatened to extend its lead with four shots within the first four-and-a-half minutes of the second quarter, but none of them were on goal. On a counterattack, Frankie Alley (Gardner, Mass.) took the ball down the field and found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season, tying the match at 1-1.

Just three-and-a-half minutes later, the Corsairs took the lead for good by successfully executing a penalty corner opportunity, with Harley Hodge and Carvalho setting up Maggie McCafferty for her second goal of the year.

Hodge pressured the Pride defense with three shots in the first five minutes of the third quarter, including one that hit the post and another that was turned away by Regis goalie Jocelyn White (Wilmington, Mass.). The Corsairs took advantage of another penalty corner opportunity to increase their lead as Mya Amaral set up Carvalho for her first goal of the season.

Regis created two penalty corner opportunities midway through the third period, but its three shots were either blocked or off-target. The Pride could not take advantage of two Corsair green cards near the end of the third quarter, and both teams did not score on penalty corner chances early in the fourth quarter.

Alley cut the Regis deficit to one with 6:11 remaining in regulation as she corralled the rebound of her own shot and beat Trombly for her second goal of the contest. The Pride could not create another scoring opportunity down the stretch as the Corsairs held on for the victory.

UMass Dartmouth outshot Regis 14-9, led by Hodge with five shots while Alley finished with five shots and Pero added four shots. Trombly and White were credited with two saves apiece in net for their respective teams.

Regis College (1-4) returns to action next Wednesday, Sept. 21, to host Mount Holyoke College starting at 7:30 p.m. at Regis Stadium.
