Pride Field Hockey Drops Season Opener

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Regis College lost to Eastern Connecticut State, 8-0, Saturday afternoon in the Pride's 2022 season opener for field hockey at Rick McCarthy Field.

The Pride stayed close throughout the first quarter as first-year goalie Sarai Velez (Everett, Mass.) made six saves in the opening 15 minutes. The Warriors picked up their first goal just under six minutes into the contest as Liz LaMarco swept the ball in from the right side.

LaMarco scored again one-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter, but two more saves from Velez helped keep the Warrior lead at 2-0 heading into halftime. Eastern Connecticut State started to pull away in the third quarter with two goals in the span of five-and-a-half minutes.

In the fourth quarter, LaMarco completed her hat trick and added her second assist of the match as the home team tallied four goals in the final 15 minutes.

Velez finished with 12 saves during the afternoon, while three Warrior goalies combined for two saves. Frankie Alley (Gardner, Mass.) led the Pride with two total shots, and Ava Costello (North Easton, Mass.) and Sarah Juskiewicz (Gorham, Maine) each were credited with one shot on goal.

Regis College (0-1) plays five of its next six matches at Regis Stadium, starting with the home opener Tuesday, Sept. 6, against Framingham State starting at 4 p.m.
