Field Hockey Falls in Season Finale

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College lost to Johnson & Wales University, 5-0, Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference field hockey match at Regis Stadium.

Johnson & Wales immediately took control of the match, drawing several penalty corners, but the Wildcats could not convert on any scoring chances early in the contest. The visitors finally broke through with just over three minutes remaining in the first period when Mackenzie Wolf corralled the loose ball and found Kaitlyn Freeman, who was successful on her shot for her second goal of the season.

Just over two minutes into the second period, after a shot by Jillian Miele was turned away by Regis goalie Jocelyn White (Wilmington, Mass.), Wolf collected the rebound and found McKayla Weaver for her seventh goal of the season to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage. Johnson & Wales created several other chances in the final six minutes of the period, but White made two saves and Sarah Tetrault (North Easton, Mass.) cleared another shot off the line for a defensive save.

One minute after halftime, in the midst of a penalty corner play, Weaver's scoring attempt was redirected into the net by Miele for her first goal of the match. At the end of the third period, as a penalty corner play continued, White stopped a shot by Darian Shepherd, but Margaret Johnson grabbed the rebound and converted on her scoring attempt to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead.

Less than three minutes into the fourth period, Miele was successful on a penalty stroke opportunity. During the final period, the Pride attempted to break through thanks to shots by Morgan Pero (Hartford, Vt.) and Hope Celli (Pembroke, Mass.), but Wildcat goalie Madison Flaxington picked up two saves to maintain her shutout.

White finished the match with 13 saves as Johnson & Wales collected 19 shots on goal, led by Miele and Johnson with five shots on goal apiece.

Before the match, Celli, Tetrault, and Kacey Thompson (Rutland, Vt.) were recognized in a Senior Night presentation.

Regis (3-10, 3-8 GNAC) sees its 2021 season end, as the Pride finish in a three-way tie for eighth place in the GNAC standings. However, Anna Maria will receive the eighth seed in the GNAC Tournament as it wins the tiebreaker over Regis and University of Saint Joseph. Johnson & Wales (14-3, 10-1 GNAC) will be the second seed in the upcoming tournament and will host a quarterfinal match Saturday, Oct. 30.
