Regis Field Hockey Sees Late Rally Come Up Short

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College cut its deficit to one goal on two occasions, but University of Saint Joseph was able to hold on for a 3-2 victory Wednesday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference field hockey match at Regis Stadium.

Saint Joseph took the lead just 2:43 into the match as Cayleen DeFaranos fed Emma Kociszewski in front of the net for the Blue Jays' first goal of the match. The visitors had another solid scoring chance midway through the first period, but consecutive shots by Alexa Kowalski were blocked.

Midway through the second period, the Blue Jays took advantage of having one more player on the field, as Kowalski scored off an assist by Maya Tomko just 21 seconds after a green card was issued to a Regis player. The Pride started to pressure the Blue Jay defense, but goalie Wendy Bowden made four saves in the span of a minute-and-a-half off two shots on goal apiece by Olivia Bell (Mechanic Falls, Maine) and Morgan Pero (Hartford, Vt.).

Regis finally broke through with 1:49 remaining in the second period as Frankie Alley (Gardner, Mass.) corralled the ball and scored her first career collegiate goal, cutting the Pride deficit to 2-1 heading into halftime. After a scoreless third period, Saint Joseph added an insurance goal as Nina Lestrud scored off an assist by Makenzie Dinger with 2:15 left in regulation.

Alley would pick up her second goal of the match in the final seconds, but Regis ran out of time in its attempt to tie the contest. Alley led the Pride with five total shots as Regis outshot Saint Joseph, 14-8. Bowden finished with six saves in the winning effort, while Regis goalie Jocelyn White (Wilmington, Mass.) was credited with one save.
