Field Hockey Rally Falls Just Short Wednesday Night

WESTON, Mass. – In a hard-fought, defensive-driven battle, Regis College lost to Western New England University, 2-1, Wednesday night in a non-conference collegiate field hockey match at Regis Stadium.

After a scoreless first quarter that saw little offense on either side, Western New England began pressing the play, creating several penalty corner opportunities. With only 53 seconds remaining in the first half, Abby Burns of the Golden Bears scored on a speedy shot off the penalty corner insertion pass from teammate Carly-Anna Barba.

Late in the third quarter, the Golden Bear pair would meet up again on another penalty corner as Barba assisted Burns for her second goal of the contest, giving Western New England a 2-0 lead.

Only one minute after the second Western New England goal, first-year player Isabella Celli (Pembroke, Mass.) scored as teammate Frankie Alley (Gardner, Mass.) took the ball down the field ahead of the Golden Bear defense, brought it into the scoring arc, and found Celli in front of the net.

Western New England goalie Zoey Wexler earned the win to improve her record to 3-1, making one save. For Regis, Jocelyn White (Wilmington, Mass.) made seven saves to keep the Pride close throughout the night.

Regis College (0-5) next hosts Anna Maria in a conference contest Saturday, Oct. 2 starting at 12 p.m. Western New England (4-3) hosts Salve Regina Friday, Oct. 1, beginning at 6 p.m.
