Field Hockey Earns Third Straight Shutout Saturday

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College took care of business to remain in contention for a berth in the postseason conference tournament, scoring a goal in each period to defeat Albertus Magnus College, 4-0, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference field hockey match at Regis Stadium.

The Pride controlled the action right from the start, drawing a penalty corner 23 seconds into the match and taking two shots within the first two minutes. In the ninth minute, off Regis' second penalty corner of the day, Joslyn O'Brien (Petersham, Mass.) took a shot that was stopped by Falcon goalie Mikayla Lyston, but Ashley Chipman (Stoughton, Mass.) collected the rebound and found the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

Regis drew another penalty corner right at the start of the second period. After inserting the ball, Chipman stationed herself at the right post, received the return pass, and sent her own pass towards the front of the goal. Sheridan Blaha (Waltham, Mass.) was able to direct the ball into the net for her team-leading 15th goal of the season, giving the Pride a 2-0 lead that would remain through halftime.

Late in the third period, the Pride finally converted again, as Nora Buck (Shawmut, Maine) gathered her own rebound and was successful on the follow-up attempt for her third goal of the season. Midway through the fourth period, Regis ran another penalty corner play, as Sidney Lowe's (Lancaster, Mass.) service was redirected into the goal by Hope Celli (Pembroke, Mass.) for Celli's third goal of 2019.

The Pride finished the match with 34 total shots, including 17 shots on goal, and 21 penalty corners, while the Falcons, employing a defensive-based philosophy throughout the match, ended up with just one shot and two penalty corners. O'Brien led Regis with eight total shots, with Buck and Celli earning six shots apiece.

Lyston, the GNAC leader in saves entering the day, earned 12 saves, while Rochelle Furino picked up a defensive save for the Falcons. Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) was credited with her fifth shutout of the season, including her third straight blanking, despite not making any saves and seeing little action at her end of the field.

Albertus Magnus (1-12, 0-8 GNAC) has concluded its regular season and will not qualify for the GNAC Tournament.

Regis (6-10, 3-4 GNAC) will play its final regular season match at Johnson & Wales Wednesday, Oct. 30, starting at 5 p.m. The Pride are currently tied for sixth place in the league standings, with the top six squads qualifying for the conference tournament.
