Strong Defensive Performance Not Enough as Pride Fall

NEWTON, Mass. – The Regis College field hockey team fell to Lasell University Saturday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at Grellier Field, despite a strong performance in net by Pride goalkeeper Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine), 1-0.

In the first quarter, the Lasers took control of the match, earning four penalty corners in the period. They outshot the Pride with three shots on net while Regis was unable to put a shot on goal.

At the start of the second quarter, Joslyn O'Brien (Petersham, Mass.) and Amelia Thomas (Hopkinton, N.H.) were able to put a pair of shots on target for the Pride, but Sofia Rodriguez was able to make both saves. Winkin was able to save three more shot attempts by the Lasers in the quarter to finish the first half with a total of six saves.

The Lasers scored with 3:26 left in the third quarter when Brooke Landry found a passing lane to Rebecca Duke, who was able to get the ball past Winkin to give the Lasers the 1-0 lead.

In the fourth quarter, Nora Buck (Shawmut, Maine) had a pair of opportunities that went wide of the net. Regis found themselves with back to back penalty corners. After failing to record a shot off the first, Thomas shot the ball towards the net that Rodriguez knocked back out. Sheridan Blaha (Waltham, Mass.) then fired a shot that Rodriguez also stopped, securing the victory for the Lasers.

Winkin and Rodriguez were both outstanding in net combining for a total of 12 saves in the match, as Winkin saved eight of the nine shots she faced (88.9 percent) while Rodriguez was a perfect 4 for 4. Lasell held an 8-4 edge in penalty corners through the match.
