WESTON, Mass. – Regis College stayed with one of the top teams in the region, but Western Connecticut State's offense had too much firepower as the Colonials defeated the Pride, 4-1, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference field hockey match at Regis Stadium.

Western Connecticut State (4-0) continually drew penalty corners early in the first quarter, but no goals came from any of the first six opportunities. On the seventh penalty corner of the quarter, a shot by Lili Dickey was blocked, but Jacalyn Doerwald was able to corral the rebound and score the first goal of the match.

Midway through the second quarter, the Colonials increased their lead as Dickey found Carly Matasavage for a goal. Two minutes later, Western Connecticut State earned another tally as Morgan Matthews scored off an assist by Melissa Krim, giving the visitors a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.

After the Colonials failed to convert on four more penalty corner chances in the third quarter, Regis broke through, as Nora Buck (Shawmut, Maine) sent a pass into the box that found the stick of Jamie Juskiewicz (Gorham, Maine). Juskiewicz's shot eluded the Colonial defense to cut the Pride deficit to two entering the fourth quarter.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, Western Connecticut State extended its lead back to three as Matthews assisted on a goal by Amanda Spano. Regis created one final scoring chance with a penalty corner in the last minute of the game, but Amelia Thomas's (Hopkinton, N.H.) shot was stopped by Colonial goalie Samantha Ripegno.

Western Connecticut State outshot Regis, 17-5, led by Dickey with four shots and Matthews with three shots. Neve Manion played the first 39 minutes in net for the Colonials and made one save, while Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) was credited with one save, but she also worked to keep the Pride in the match by preventing other scoring chances.

Regis (0-2) is scheduled to host Framingham State Wednesday, Sept. 11, beginning at 5 p.m. at Regis Stadium. The Rams will enter the match with a 1-1 record after losing to New England College in overtime Saturday, 2-1.
