Regis Field Hockey Loses to Thomas

WESTON, Mass. – Battling constant rain throughout the night, Thomas College continually put offensive pressure on Regis College, and it finally paid off in the second half, as the Terriers defeated the Pride, 4-0, Tuesday night in a non-conference collegiate field hockey match at Regis Stadium.

Regis thought it had taken the lead in the 10th minute when Ashley Chipman (Stoughton, Mass.) sent a penalty corner to Joslyn O'Brien (Petersham, Mass.), whose entry into the box was seemingly deflected into the net. After deliberation, it was determined that O'Brien was just outside the arc when she hit the ball, and that the deflection was off a Terrier stick, wiping out the Pride goal.

In the second half, Thomas drew three penalty corners in the first eight minutes, but the Terriers could not take advantage of any of those scoring opportunities. In the 47th minute, Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) had a one-on-one situation with the Thomas goalie, but MacKenzie Oberholzer was able to kick the ball away, keeping the match scoreless.

Thomas (6-5) finally broke through in the 52nd minute, as the Terriers drew another penalty corner and worked the ball around the arc. Haley Thebarge found Britney Gregoire in front of the net, and Gregoire converted on the shot for her eighth goal of the season.

The score was still 1-0 Thomas when Regis called a timeout with 7:13 remaining in regulation. However, the Terriers quickly regained possession and tallied a flurry of goals as Emily Pratt, Kelci Faulkingham, and Katie Taylor all scored within a span of four minutes.

Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) played the entire match in net for the Pride and finished with six saves. Oberholzer needed to make just the one save to earn the victory as Thomas outshot Regis, 17-2, and created 14 penalty corner opportunities while holding the Pride to just two penalty corner chances.

Regis (1-5) heads to New Haven, Conn., to face Albertus Magnus Thursday, Sept. 27, at 5 p.m. The Falcons are currently in their first year of competition in field hockey, and this match is not a conference contest. The Pride kick off the Regis Stadium portion of Regis Fest Saturday, Sept. 29, against GNAC foe Johnson & Wales starting at 11 a.m.
