WINTHROP, Mass. – After shutting out Rivier University to help the Regis College field hockey team earn its first victory of the 2018 season, sophomore Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Goalkeeper of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
Coming into the match with 13 career saves in four previous appearances, Winkin finished with 14 saves, eight in the first half and six in the second half, to keep the Raiders off the board throughout Saturday's conference matchup. Winkin would earn her first career collegiate victory and shutout thanks to a Regis goal with less than six minutes remaining in regulation that gave the Pride a 1-0 victory.
"Hope has put forward great effort during the first few weeks of the season. We have seen her confidence and skill improve tremendously," Regis head coach Annie Villare said. "Hope was a staple on defense in our win this past weekend, as she kept our defense organized while shutting down our opponent's attack to earn her first shutout."
Earlier in the week, Winkin started Regis's match at Framingham State and finished the first half with six saves while allowing just one goal for an .857 save percentage. She also played the second half and overtime sessions in the Pride's home opener against Becker and was credited with one save in over 47 minutes on the field.
Saturday's victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Pride that dated back to last season, with Regis's last win coming on Oct. 7, 2017, and its last shutout taking place in the previous contest Oct. 3, 2017.
Winkin's 14 saves are the most by a Pride goalie in a single match since Raegan Heck accumulated 25 saves against Fitchburg State Oct. 1, 2015, and the most without allowing a goal since Morgan Mitchell made 15 saves in a 4-0 victory at Becker Oct. 14, 2011.
Regis (1-3, 1-0 GNAC) plays its next three matches at home, starting Saturday, Sept. 15, against preseason conference favorite Saint Joseph's College at 12 p.m. The Monks enter a busy week with a 3-0 overall record, as they host Gordon Monday and Husson Wednesday before making the trip to Regis Stadium.
