WESTON, Mass. - Junior Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) scored with 17:17 left on the clock at the Regis (Mass.) field hockey team defeated Framingham State University 1-0 in non-conference action at Regis Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Pride runs its winning streak to four and improves to 6-4 overall. The Rams drop their second straight contest and fall to 2-8.
The teams played a tightly-contested first half that would come to a close without a score. The teams were even at six shots apiece in the half, with the Rams holding a 5-2 lead in penalty corners. Framingham State's best scoring chance of the afternoon came as the half approached its final stages. With just under six minutes remaining on the clock, sophomore Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.) broke in on a semi-breakaway, but Pride goalkeeper Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) charged out to make a diving save and keep the Rams off the scoreboard
Callahan opened the scoring on the afternoon midway through the second half, scoring her third goal of the season. The junior took a feed from sophomore Madi McLellan (Fremont, N.H.) at the top of the circle and beat Ram goalkeeper Haley Duggan (Framingham, Mass.) through the five-hole to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. McLellan's assist was the rookie's first collegiate point.
The Pride defense buckled down in the second half to keep the Rams from finding the back of the net. The Rams only recorded one shot in the second half, a Meaghann Ackerman (Littleton, Mass.) shot that got blocked three and a half minutes into the period. The Pride went the final 31:31 of the contest without allowing a shot and the entire second half without allowing a penalty corner.
Malcolm was credited with the win, making four saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season. Duggan received the loss in net, making two saves.
Next up for the Pride, the team will travel to Johnson & Wales for a 3:30 p.m. start against the Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in GNAC action. Framingham State will take on the GNAC's Rivier University when they next take the field on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
