Pride Comes From Behind to Beat Anna Maria 3-2

WESTON, Mass. - Freshman Ashley Chipman (Stoughton, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal with 11:20 remaining on the clock as the Regis (Mass.) field hockey team came from behind to beat the AMCats of Anna Maria College by a final of 3-2 on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Pride improves to 3-4 on the season, while the loss drops the AMCats to 4-6.

Anna Maria came out to a flying start, as AMCat senior Kaitlyn Moran (Leicester, Mass.) opened the scoring just 1:49 into the contest. Moran worked her way to the top of the area before firing a shot past Regis goalkeeper Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.).

Moran tacked on another goal just under 11 minutes later, when she beat Malcolm on a penalty stroke. Using a head fake to get the keeper down, Moran lifted a lob shot over the falling Malcolm to give Anna Maria a 2-0 lead just 12:30 into the game. Moran's second goal of the game was her team-leading 14th of the season.

Pride sophomore Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) got the hosts on the board exactly six minutes later, when she netted her fifth goal of the season on a rebound. After teammate Mackenzie Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) fired a shot on goalkeeper Bryanna Tobin (Deep River, Conn.), Callahan scooped up the loose ball and buried it to cut the lead in half.

Anna Maria took a 2-1 lead into halftime, but Callahan's second goal of the game at 42:40 evened the score early in the second half. The midfielder scooped up her own rebound and beat Tobin to tie the game at two.

With the two sides splitting chances at both ends, it was the Pride who broke the deadlock late in the game. After a scramble in front of the net, it was Chipman who pushed the ball over the goal line to put Regis on top. The goal would hold up as the game-winner, earning the Pride its second consecutive win.

Malcolm finished the game with 13 saves to pick up her third win of the season, while senior defender Carla Brito (Madeira, Portugal) was credited with a defensive save when she swept what appeared to be an equalizing goal off the line in the final minutes. For the AMCats, Tobin finished with eight saves.

On deck for the Pride, they'll travel to Bay Path University for a 10:00 a.m. start on Saturday. Anna Maria will host a GNAC showdown against Lasell College on Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m. in their next game.
