CHARGERS NET TWO EARLY, HOLD OFF PRIDE

WESTON, Mass. – Colby-Sawyer College scored a pair of first half goals that stood up for the entire game as the Chargers defeated Regis College, 2-0, in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon. The Pride fall to 2-2 overall on the year, while Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-3.

Colby-Sawyer controlled play early as they attempted five penalty corners in the opening five minutes of the game, but Raegan Heck (Phillipston, Mass.) was up to the task, turning away blasts from Erika Leach (Barrington, N.H.) and Jordan Teixeira (Exeter, N.H.). The Pride defense was able to gain possession and raced up field, leading to a one-on-one chance for Laurie DeMars (Maynard, Mass.), but Jodi Dumayne (Claremont, N.H.) stopped her on the break.

In the ninth minute, Regis fired off three shots in a 20 second span, but none would find the back of the net. This time the Chargers changed fields and kept possession in the Regis half. In the 14th minute, Taylor O'Connor (Franklin, N.H.) gained possession at the top of the circle, turned and fired high and to the left and into the back of the cage to give Colby-Sawyer a 1-0 lead.

Nearly three minutes later, O'Connor came racing down the right side of the turf and blasted a cross to the front of the net. Paige Viens (Middlebury, Vt.) got her stick on it and deflected the ball into the goal to put the Chargers in front, 2-0. Colby-Sawyer would maintain possession the rest of the half as the game entered the break at 2-0.

The Chargers continued to try and increase their lead in the second half, but the Regis defense stood firm, with Raegan Heck making five saves in the stanza. Regis would make one final push late in the period as Jenna Casello (Westborough, Mass.) worked the ball deep into Colby-Sawyer territory, but the Chargers cleared out the ball before any shot attempt and held on for a 2-0 victory.

Colby-Sawyer held a 20-1 advantage in penalty corners, while outshooting the Pride at a 19-5 clip. Jodi Dumayne picked up her second win of the season while making three saves, with Raegan Heck suffering the setback despite making 10 saves.

Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) took a pair of shots to lead the Pride offense with Laurie DeMars, Kelsey Morton (South Portland, Maine), and Jenna Casello also attempting shots.

The Crimson and Gold look to rebound on Saturday morning when they host New England College in an 11:00 a.m. matchup. Colby-Sawyer travels to Becker College on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
