WILDCATS DOWN PRIDE, 3-0

WESTON, Mass. – Johnson & Wales University forward Giovanna Ciavardoni (Latham, N.Y.) took 12 shots and scored her third goal of the season as the Wildcats defeated Regis College 3-0 at Regis Stadium on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup in Weston, Mass. With the victory, JWU moves to 2-4 on the year and the Pride fall to 1-5 on the year.

Regis had an opportunity to get on the board first, during the first five minutes of play with a penalty corner opportunity. Sashae Walls (Everett, Mass.) took the chance for Regis and passed the ball into the box. Regis players sent the ball back and forth trying to find the best possible shot, and then the ball landed on Hailee Forest's (Amherst, N.H.) stick. She immediately ripped a shot towards the cage, but the shot was blocked by a JWU defender and cleared out of the zone, ending the Pride scoring threat.

JWU scored two goals during the first half of play. During the 26th minute, the Wildcats had their offense set up in the Pride's defensive zone. Amanda Takach (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) crossed the ball into the box as Courtney McTeague (Saugus, Mass.) was waiting for the pass, and tipped the ball into the bottom left corner of the cage, giving JWU an early 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, at the 31:17 mark, JWU added to their slim lead. Giovanna Ciavardoni took a shot that hit off Pride goalie Raegan Heck's (Phillipston, Mass.) pad that trickled past the line into the back of the cage.

Yasmine Akib (Everett, Mass.) and Sashae Walls had chances to cut the Pride's deficit in half, but Akib's shot was turned away by Wildcat goalie Shannon Yoder (Boyertown, Pa.) and Walls shot went wide of the cage.

The Wildcats added to their lead after a penalty corner opportunity during the 65th minute. Cassandra McClaflin (S. Hadley, Mass.) took the corner and connected with teammate Shaina Thompson (Delmar, Del.) who rifled a shot that bounced off a Regis defenseman's leg and the ball took a bounce and ended up into the upper corner of the cage for Thompson's second goal of the year.

The Pride had one final opportunity to add a goal as Hailee Forest took a corner chance, but Regis came up with no shots and time expired, giving the Wildcats the 3-0 victory.

Regis was outshot 29-4 during the game. The majority of the contest was played in the Pride's defensive zone as the Wildcats were also awarded 10 penalty corners as well, while Regis was only awarded three. Raegan Heck made 12 saves on the night and fell to 1-5 on the campaign, while Genesiz Gudiel (Lawrence, Mass.) made two defensive save for Pride. Shannon Yoder moved to 2-4 on the season for the Wildcats and made two saves.

Regis looks to bounce back on Friday evening when they welcome Bay Path University to Weston to face the Wildcats. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
