LYONS' BIG SECOND HALF DOOMS PRIDE

LYONS' BIG SECOND HALF DOOMS PRIDE

WESTON, Mass. – Wheaton College had six different players score a goal, and eight players record at least one point, as the Lyons defeated host Regis College, 6-0, on Friday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action in Weston, Mass. The Lyons move to 3-1 on the year, while the Pride have dropped two-straight to fall to 1-2.

Regis drew the first penalty corner of the game in the opening minutes, but Jenna Casello's (Westborough, Mass.) shot was sent away by the Lyons defense, and Wheaton took control of the game. Outshooting the Pride 9-1 in the first 20+ minutes of action, the Lyons finally broke through in the 24th minute as Kelsey Buckley (Gilford, N.H.) tipped in a blast from outside the circle off the stick of Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass.).

Two minutes later, the Lyons earned a penalty corner and Harris sent the ball into Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I.). McCann lifted the ball nearly 20 feet in the year and over the head of the Regis keeper and into the back of the net to put Wheaton on top, 2-0. Regis' Rachel Diebold (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took the only Pride shot in the rest of the half, but was turned away by Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass.) as Wheaton entered the half up 2-0.

The Lyons wasted no time out of the break as Ellen Gulezian (Merimac, Mass.) entered the scoring column on Kelsey Harris' third assist of the game to put Wheaton on top, 3-0. Regis nearly answered two minutes later as Laurie DeMars (Maynard, Mass.) had a chance in front, but Wolters was there again for the save. Both defenses and keepers stepped up the intensity over the next 15 minutes of action as neither team could find the back of the net.

In the 55th minute, Darci Bruce (Walpole, Mass.) tipped in a Tracy McCann blast to put the Lyons on top 4-0, and Emma Peterson (Yarmouth, Maine) scored her first career goal in the 66th minute as she tipped home a shot from Katie Peters (Medway, Mass.) for a 5-0 Wheaton lead. Mikaela Coombs (Scarborough, Maine) added her first career goal in the final minute of the game with Brooke Dugan picking up her first career assist to give the game its final score of 6-0.

Wheaton outshot the Pride 33-6 and held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners. Raegan Heck (Phillipston, Mass.) made 12 saves in the game, while Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) saw her first career game action and made four saves. Genesiz Gudiel (Lawrence, Mass.) added a defensive save.

The Lyons' Madison Wolters moved to 3-1 on the year while making three saves. Riley Thompson (Fairfield, Conn.) and Kyla Teeters (Middletown, R.I.) split the final 14+ minutes in net, with neither facing a shot.

Regis looks to bounce back on Tuesday night when the Pride host Simmons College in a 6:00 p.m. game. Wheaton will travel to Lasell College on Wednesday night for a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
