PRIDE CLOSE OUT SEASON IN 3-2 HEARTBREAKER TO WHEELOCK

BOSTON, Mass. – The Regis College field hockey team fell 3-2 against the Wheelock College Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in the final regular season New England Collegiate Conference match, which was played at Winsor Field. The Wildcats improve to 3-10 overall and 3-3 in league play, while capturing the fourth seed in the NECC Tournament.

The Pride opened up the scoring in the first half when junior forward Christine O'Toole (Boston, Mass.) was able to come up with the ball in a scrum in front of the cage and feed sophomore forward Yasmine Akib (Everett, Mass.) for her second goal of the year at 12:34 for a 1-0 edge.

Wheelock's Jenna Ghoman (Danvers, Mass.) pulled her squad even when she collected a rebound off her own shot and scored at the 25:24 mark to make it 1-1.

Regis would later reclaim the lead in the second half when sophomore midfielder Cheyenne Genga (South Windsor, Conn.) found junior midfielder Stacy Burns (Waltham, Mass.) in front of the cage for her first goal of the year and a 2-1 lead at 44:27.

Wheelock managed to tie the game again in the 50th minute of play. Freshman midfielder Jen Ryan (Bellingham, Mass.) sent a cross from outside the circle to a driving Elizabeth Cooper (Mansfield, Mass.) for her second tally of the season to knot the game at two goals apiece.

The Wildcats would score again at the 63:18 minute mark in what proved to be the game-winning goal. Senior midfielder Rachel Robohm (North Easton, Mass.) sent a pass from outside the circle to classmate Despina Savvoulides (Norwalk, Conn.), who converted the cross into a hard one-timer for her 14th goal of the season.

Freshman goalie Raegan Heck (Phillipston, Mass.) turned away six shots for the Pride, while Molly Rose (Weymouth, Mass.) finished with eight saves for Wheelock.

The Pride, who have been eliminated from the NECC playoffs with the loss, wrap up their season with a final record of 3-13 and 2-4 in league play.
