REGIS GRABS FIRST WIN IN 4-0 VICTORY

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College field hockey team picked up its first win of the 2012 season with a 4-0 victory over visiting Daniel Webster College on Tuesday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action. The Pride move to 1-10 overall and 1-1 in the NECC, while Daniel Webster drops to 1-8 and 1-1 in league play.

The Pride's Cheyenne Genga (South Windsor, Conn.) got the scoring started for Regis as she converted on a penalty stroke to give Regis the early 1-0 lead. Nearly 10 minutes later, Genga carried the ball up the right side of the field and passed across to the top of the circle where Devan Wirtanen (Westminster, Mass.) quickly tapped the ball opposite post to an open Christine O'Toole (Boston, Mass.) who buried her second goal of the season to put Regis on top 2-0.

Daniel Webster had its first scoring chance of the game with just under 12 minutes to play in the first half as Brandi Ritz (Burlington, N.J.) corralled a penalty corner pass from Samantha Bark (Belfast, Maine) and fired a rocket on net. The Pride's Raegan Heck (Phillipston, Mass.) made a blocker save and then turned away two more quick shots by Ritz and Melissa Kelly (Hill, N.H.) to preserve the 2-0 advantage.

Regis kept up the offensive pressure throughout the rest of the first half, and entered the break leading 2-0. The Pride outshot DWC at a 15-5 clip and held a 9-3 edge in penalty corners. Regis' Raegan Heck made three saves in the period, while her counterpart Danielle Melanson (Derry, N.H.) turned away seven shots.

The second half was all Regis as they held a 10-2 edge in shots and 11-1 advantage in penalty corners over the final 35 minutes. The Pride's Laurie DeMars (Maynard, Mass.) tacked on two more goals in the stanza, one on her own rebound and another off the stick of Sashae Walls (Everett, Mass.), to give Regis the 4-0 victory.

Raegan Heck picks up her first career win and shutout while making four saves and improves to 1-7 on the year. Danielle Melanson drops to 1-8 this season despite making 10 saves in the setback.

The Pride look to make it two-straight wins on Friday afternoon as Regis travels to Bay Path College for an NECC contest at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles will try and bounce back on Thursday when they host Fitchburg State University in a non-league game scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
